A blink becomes a word. EyeCon turns brain and muscle signals into a real channel between patients, families, and therapists — starting in the ICU and continuing long after discharge.
In recent years, there has been growing recognition that some patients diagnosed as unconscious or in a disorder of consciousness are still capable of processing information, perceiving their surroundings, and even attempting to respond — despite being unable to speak or move.
EyeCon combines real-time brain activity monitoring (EEG) with detection of subtle muscle responses (EMG) — primarily blinking — to identify clear, consistent responses and establish a baseline communication capacity. Through personalized stimuli and real-time feedback, it enables a gradual process of eliciting intentional responses, even when the patient has no ability to speak or move.
A single, comfortable headband reads brain activity and eye-muscle contractions at the bedside.
Music and cues the patient knows are used to prompt and reinforce an intentional blink response.
A licensed clinician reviews session data and adjusts the protocol — without needing to be at the bedside.
The patient learns to give a voluntary "yes" through an intentional blink, prompted by familiar music.
A clear differentiation is established between "yes" and "no" responses — most ICU patients who reach this point are referred for continued rehabilitation.
For longer-term disorders of consciousness, individualized questions establish a baseline cognitive assessment.
A customized communication system is built on blinking and voluntary responses — sometimes transitioning to full AAC systems.
EyeCon is the subject of a 2026 peer-reviewed paper in Neuropsychological Rehabilitation. Read it here.
EyeCon is used in multiple clinical centres including Rambam Health Care Campus and the Reuth Rehabilitation Center. It grew out of the lab's published EEG-based attention markers, already used in stroke rehabilitation, ADHD, and other clinical settings. Every EyeCon session is supervised by a licensed therapist — never a device alone — and care continues from the ICU bedside through home rehabilitation with the same protocol and the same clinician.
